About the publication

Local information you can use.

Chesapeake Near You is a free, independent publication for people who live, work and spend time in Chesapeake, Virginia.

We focus on a practical question: what changed, where does it matter, and what should you do next? Our coverage includes roads, development, city services and decisions, local places, parks and useful weekend plans.

Independent of city government

We are not affiliated with or operated by the City of Chesapeake. We do not replace official emergency alerts, government notices or instructions from public authorities. Use the relevant official source for urgent or time-sensitive decisions.

How we work with sources

We start with official records: city notices, agendas, minutes, planning documents and information from the institution or organizer responsible. Local reporting and reader tips can point us to a story; they do not substitute for verification.

We link the evidence alongside the facts. We distinguish a proposal from a recommendation, an approval from construction, and a scheduled date from a completed event. When a date or next step cannot be verified, we say so.

AI tools help us discover, organize and summarize information. An AI answer is not a factual source. We do not invent reporters, residents, quotes, testimonials or on-the-ground reporting.

Corrections and updates

If a fact is wrong or an official record changes, we correct or update the relevant story and describe the change in its visible update record. Archive editions retain their original editorial text, with a prominent correction or follow-up where needed.

Send a tip or correction to hi@y5.gg. Include the page, the detail in question and a source if available. A tip is a lead until verified.
